Let's review
Since moving back to the US in 2000 (as computers, especially Macs, were prohibitively expensive in New Zealand) I have legitimately purchased: -a 500MHz iBook -a 1.33GHz iBook G4 -a 2.5GHz Macbook Pro However, on account of frequent hardware failures requiring extensive mail-in repair service in all of the above machines, I have received for free: -an 800MHz iBook G4 -a 2.0GHz Macbook and...

I wonder if my brain is like a digital amplifier
Some component shorts just for an instant. Capacitors drain. Chips heat up. Clock crystals fluctuate. The power supply steps in and momentarily cuts everyone off. Voltage regulators cut out to keep from underclocking chips. Relays click. Buffers clear. Power comes back, and chips wake up with a blank slate, completely unaware of what they were just working on. They start over, loading things from...

RIP Mr. Near
blacktulle: I wouldn’t trade my life or career for anyone’s. I was about to go floor hopping with my friends when I checked the CaringBridge update on my BlackBerry. I prayed that it would be an entry from Mr. Near himself, telling us that he was getting better and about to go out for barbecue. But it wasn’t. It was the entry I dreaded. Mr. Near died. Today my thoughts are with Pam and...

such a short fuse.
ellicepark: i should never have absorbed the crap that people gave me. now i’m starting to exhibit it. I know blaming others is easy, but I’m inclined to agree. I wasn’t always like this, something wore me down.

In three minutes
I officially start learning how to Write Music. Scary, cool, unpredictable. My head is overflowing with ideas but my gut is full of doubt whether I really have what it takes to push them through. Here goes!

A lesson I've learned a thousand times over
When Apple does something retarded, immediately call Applecare and ask to speak to Customer Relations. I suspect they can see all kinds of information on you that other parts of Apple can’t (how many Macs you’ve bought, how many times those Macs broke, when they were repaired/replaced), so they know when they’re dealing with a long-time loyal Apple customer and know not to piss...

Open source is a laugh
Specifically, in these example configuration files for the network monitoring suite Nagios, they provide a monitoring configuration for a Windows machine and one for a Linux box: # Linux host definition template - This is NOT a real host, just a template! define host{ name linux-server ; The name of this host template notification_period workhours ...

Not to worry
I am still hard at work setting up my room whose components and layouts I ruminated on throughout the summer. A newer, crazier YouTube video than last year’s room demo is coming, fear not. Here’s a little update on progress though. The audio system is complete albeit with cheap cable - I ordered high end cable along with the speakers but it was backordered and will arrive soon. The...

I dislike people who post cryptic things, so instead I’m going to be completely candid. I’m having a pretty bad day, and here’s why: My primary laptop is on the fritz, and will be in the repair shop for week. The Parasound amplifier just arrived in Connecticut and it is unlikely that it will arrive here before ResMail closes - so no speakers tonight. Above all, when people...

I don't want to jynx it
But I think maybe AT&T’s work on its 850MHz network on the east coast actually worked? I have been gone for about four months, but since I’ve been back it hasn’t been nearly as crappy as I remember. Voice coverage sounds better, and I have consistent 3G coverage - often five bars. Or could the 3GS radio be that much better? I did have a 3G when I left. Who knows.
