Nick Hornby

Wrote a movie called “An Education”, which comes out today.

I’m interested to go see it for a couple of reasons - the cast is pretty cool, it’s shot in a lot of really pretty locations in Europe (dressed up to look period 1960s), but most importantly…

Every attempt by other screenwriters to adapt Hornby novels into films - not terrible (when I need High Fidelity in my life but am too busy to read the book I generally do watch the movie, and when you need Hugh Grant in your life About A Boy is generally considered the first stop after Love Actually), but underwhelming, failing to capture the true genius of the original material.

There’s still lots of things that could go wrong. Hornby could be an awful screenwriter, although films to which he has contributed in the past tend to be well received. Horby’s tone and wit could be too modern for the period that’s being portrayed, or it could be exactly what it takes to make that period relevant and interesting.

Here’s hoping that a theater someplace in Boston will actually have it (none of them had Moon, still waiting for the BD of that one) and that I will have time to go check it out.
