Tomorrow, Tom Leykis goes off the air

KLSX in Los Angeles is changing formats at 5pm - smack in the middle of Tom Leykis’ show. (They’re going Top 40. Ew.)

I’ve never actually lived in Los Angeles or been there with access to an FM radio while the show was going on, so I’ve always heard it through podcasts and, more recently, streaming on my iPhone.

Most of you would probably find it to be a base and offensive show, but I always found it refreshing and entertaining. I admired his prowess as a broadcaster and his ability to continually and reliably create an engaging, compelling show that attracted not only listeners but callers. Beyond that he was able to sum up and put into words things that I intuitively knew but was never able to describe.

The first time I heard the Tom Leykis show was in 2006 while driving to a gig with the BlueSubmarine crew. It will always remind me of that day, and of all the days I listened to it while sitting in my cube at Ubicom in 07 and 08, and all the late nights driving home on 880.

The podcasts are also all going to disappear from the website at 5pm tomorrow, but I have no doubt someone is frantically slurping them down now and will be assembling torrents shortly.

Hope to find Tom again in another broadcast format!
